Time for a new artist portrait!
I’ve been using the little Andrew head on a blue background (beardless!) as my online avatar for quite a few years now, so I wanted something new that was more in line with my current drawing style. I actually drew this last year for my Manga Jiman competition profile, but I wasn’t very active online in 2023 so it never made its way onto the Internet. I originally came up with the idea for it when asked for a polaroid photo to stick up on a wall for a sort of artist collective thing I was briefly involved with. I didn’t want to use a photograph, so I was going to draw a polaroid myself being papped sneak it up on the polaroid wall when nobody was looking. In the end I couldn’t find the wall of polaroids, so that never happened! But I held on to the idea and eventually it became this slightly nervous portrait instead.
I’m still very fond of that old blue image with the shiny bald head! It was only a throwaway pencil doodle, maybe 2cm tall, but I liked it enough to scan and colour and it somehow ended up being my face on the Internet. Which is funny, because it’s extremely rare for me to shave my beard. When I switch avatars again I’ll probably recreate a version of old blue and faithful, only with full goatee. But for now, I’m going monochrome.
