"I'm a Bum" 4 panel comic by Andrew Attwell

A comic! And a scrappy one at that. Been a while since I posted any comics at all. This is based on a real conversation I had with my friend Francis back in 2022.

The pandemic was actually pretty good for me when it came to my art. Covid lockdowns gave me permission to knuckle down and do LOADS of drawing practice, which improved my technique a lot. In the few years since, I’ve finished a number of comic shorts, had them printed in anthologies, even placed in a national competition. But in the middle of all that, some time around 2021-2022, there was definitely some burnout going on. I was a bit upheaved, a bit lost in the woods. I was still drawing, but in inconsistent waves, and I wasn’t really showing anything to anyone – certainly not posting anything online. I can be way too precious with my artwork and hold myself to very high standards. But then the art simply doesn’t get made, and that’s no good. Hence the above exchange! I scribbled it down in pencil on a loose sheet of printer paper, no ink, no redraws, (no rulers!) just to make a point.

It doesn’t seem that complicated!

Indeed.

But some of us love to overcomplicate things.
